IBSA Consumer FAQs

  • If I am unhappy with the treatment I have received from a GOLDEN SEAL bearer, what can I do about it?

If you believe you or your child has been mistreated, deceived, or subject to any improper business practices that violate the IBSA Code of Conduct, please register a complaint through the IBSA Online Complaint Registration System.

We do ask that before you register a complaint, you attempt to resolve the point of contention with the business. IBSA member businesses are dedicated to a better Internet and better online business practices. They are usually more than happy to help you in anyway they can.

  • I have tried to resolve a difficulty with an online business I have dealt with but could not get a satisfactory resolution to the problem. Should I keep records of any communications between me and the business?

Yes. Any e-mails or other records of communications between you and the business might be very important to the process of dispute resolution.

  • In the case that a GOLDEN SEAL participant business does not resolve my complaint to my satisfaction, what options does the IBSA provide me with?

If you are unsatisfied with the response you have received from a GOLDEN SEAL participant business concerning your complaint, you may request third party arbitration through the auspices of the IBSA Complaint Resolution Process.

In that event, a third party arbitrator is hired - at no cost to yourself - and hears arguments from both sides concerning the complaint process.

While the arbitration is not formally legal and does not necessarily involve any courts, judge or lawyers, GOLDEN SEAL participant businesses are required by their IBSA membership agreements to consider the results of this arbitration as binding.

However, if unsatisfied by the results of the arbitration, the complaining party (i.e. you) is in no way bound from seeking resolution through formal legal proceedings.

  • What if I do not have a complaint but rather a more general concern about the practices of an online business or group of businesses?

If you have any concerns about internet business practices or standards anywhere, please contact us by e-mail at Questions@internetstandards.org. We are always very interested to know about your online business concerns, however general or specific they may be. The public has always been our most valuable source of information and your information will be most gratefully received.

  • Where in the world does the IBSA operate?

The IBSA operates internationally. In fact, an enormous part of the IBSA philosophy is to be specifically non-national. We believe that in the new Internet-era of commerce, where businesses deal with customers regardless of borders, that the only standards that can work are international in origin,

The IBSA is structured to integrate online businesses from any country in the world, provided they meet the exacting standards set out in our Code of Conduct.

  • What businesses can become members of the IBSA?

Any type of legal business can join the IBSA. The only requirement is that they have an active online business presence of some kind.

While some of our businesses may be controversial to many consumers (i.e. adult sites, religious literature sites, online weapon sellers, etc.), the IBSA's central concern is about the business standards that all our member businesses maintain irrespective of content.

  • How long has the IBSA existed?

The IBSA is a very young organization, in fact, only a few months old at this time. However, many of the founding members had been in discussion about the structure and operation of the Association since the late 90s.
